How to Change a Nissan Key Fob Battery
If your Nissan key fob isn’t locking, unlocking, or starting your vehicle like it used to, chances are the battery needs to be replaced. Luckily, changing a Nissan key fob battery is quick, inexpensive, and something you can do at home in just a few minutes. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you replace the battery and get back to using your key fob with confidence.
What You’ll Need
-
A small flathead screwdriver or a coin
-
A new CR2025 or CR2032 battery (check your owner’s manual or existing battery to confirm)
-
Your Nissan key fob
Step 1: Remove the Hidden Key
On the back of your Nissan key fob, you’ll see a small release latch. Slide this latch to remove the hidden mechanical key. Set the key aside—you’ll use it again once the battery is replaced.
Step 2: Open the Key Fob Case
With the mechanical key removed, you’ll see a small opening on the fob. Insert the flathead screwdriver (or coin) into the slot and gently twist to separate the two halves of the key fob. Be careful not to use too much force, as you don’t want to damage the casing.
Step 3: Remove the Old Battery
Once the case is open, you’ll see the circular battery inside. Note which side is facing up (usually the positive “+” side). Use the screwdriver to carefully lift the old battery out of the compartment.
Step 4: Insert the New Battery
Take your new CR2025 or CR2032 battery and place it into the slot with the same orientation as the old one (positive side facing up). Make sure it sits flat and securely in place.
Step 5: Reassemble the Key Fob
Snap the two halves of the fob case back together until you hear them click into place. Then, reinsert the mechanical key into its slot.
Step 6: Test Your Key Fob
Stand near your Nissan and press the lock or unlock button. If the doors respond, you’ve successfully replaced the battery! If not, double-check that the battery is installed correctly and making contact.
How Often Should You Replace a Nissan Key Fob Battery?
Most Nissan key fob batteries last between two to three years, depending on usage. If you notice reduced range, slow response, or need to press buttons multiple times, it’s usually a sign the battery is getting weak.
